What Is Venmo and How Does It Work?

Venmo is the latest money transferring app that is now being used by Apple and Android users worldwide to easily and quickly transfer money right from their cell phones. The Venmo app is similar to a social media app where you can see friends on your contact list and their profile pictures and a timeline of all their public transfers. However, you may be wondering, does Venmo send text messages or direct messages? No, it does not, but you can send emoji, GIFS or a brief message about what the transfer was for. Venmo will link to your bank account, debit card, or credit card, and once connected, you can transfer money to others.

The app works perfectly for sending money to friends or family, but scams on Venmo are beginning to rise drastically. When dealing with users you do not know on the app, there have been many occasions when Venmo fraud occurs. The unknown users have been able to steal money, gain access to the account or personal information, and other devastating Venmo scams.

Common Venmo Scams

So yes, you can be scammed on Venmo. Unfortunately, if you are a victim of a scam on Venmo, the company may not offer any fraud protection. These are just some of the Venmo scams to watch out for to protect your account.

The Texting Scam

This scam occurs similar to how phishing scams work. The scammer sends a text to your phone, including a link. This scam will typically target the user’s Venmo account. The text will appear as if it came from Venmo and seems like it may be real, but it might just be slightly different, which is why it is crucial to double-check. If you end up clicking on the link, it can result in fraudulent activity on your account.

Fake Sale

The fake sale scam occurs when the scammer implies that they are interested in the goods or services you have to sell, and once the money is transferred, the person becomes a ghost. A customer reported that the money came through to their account as a fake Venmo payment, and it appeared they received the money. This occurred when a scammer sent money from stolen credit cards and when the appropriate card owner reports the payment as fraud, you can be left with no payment, especially if you already shipped the product. Then you contact Venmo, and you find out there are no Venmo protection policies, so your money is gone.

So is Venmo safe for sellers? You take a considerable risk accepting Venmo payments if you are a seller. Venmo says you should not use it for informal sales like Facebook marketplace or Letgo.

Money Transfer Scam

The better business bureau reported this scam over a year ago, and many have fallen victim to this scam already. This scam targets any payment apps or digital wallet apps you may have, including Apple Pay, CashApp, Venmo, PayPal, and many others. This is also referred to as the “accidentally sending someone money” scam.

Like the fake sale scam, the scammer will send you money from a stolen account or card and comment on the transaction that it was an “accident,” hoping you will send the money back. In the meantime, the card’s real owner will report the transaction to the bank or credit card company and get the money back. If you sent the money, there might not be any way to get that money back. The app does not allow Venmo reverse payment, credit cards may cover fraud charges, but many apps like Venmo will not.

Catfishing

Almost everyone has heard of or knows what catfishing is now because of how common it has become. This occurs when someone creates a fake Venmo account with someone else’s pictures to make the account looks real or like someone you know. They may request money from you, and once the payment is completed, there is no way to get a Venmo refund.

This Venmo scam is sometimes hard to know if it truly is a scam or not if the fake Venmo account appears to be one of your friends or family. That is why it is crucial to double-check and reach out to someone if they request money from you on Venmo.
